Most of us associate evolution with some notion of progress. Many of us have notions of cultural finesse as a criterion, others may have education, and yet others may have wealth or power. All these criteria will however be useless if it does not stand the test of survival. Many noble cultures have fallen a prey to barbarous hordes. So while in evolution nature tries out different things only those which stand the test of natural selection can be deemed as evolutionary.
